About This Quote

A while ago, I met a friend of mine at a party. We were talking while standing on the outside of the crowd. My friend was telling me about how he had trouble staying in school because he had to work so much. He said he had to get up for work so early that it was hard for him to get enough sleep.

He told me that sometimes he didn’t have enough time to eat breakfast before getting ready for work. Then, his day started. His day was full of routine. He had to arrive at work on time, then go through his routine tasks.

There were times when he would be late for work because his alarm went off too early or he didn’t get enough sleep the night before. He said that if he decided to stay in bed instead of getting up early, there would be less chance of him making it on time for work the next day. He said that if he made it to work earlier but then got there too late, then there would be no chance of getting the job done on time that day either. That night at the party, my friend told me that when he worked in an office, they used to call him “The Ladder Guy” because they knew they could count on him always coming in with a ladder when they needed one.

When I heard this story, I wondered why people called my friend “the ladder guy” instead of “the guy who works in the office.” My friend said it was because when he worked in an office, they only sent him out when they really needed him. If someone else was doing their job just fine and didn’t need backup then my friend was not needed. When my friend told me this story, I knew how hard it must have been for him when he just wanted to go home after work and relax with his family and friends after being busy all day long. I realized that by not seeing things from another person’s point of view makes us blind and unable to see what is really going on around us. In this case, not seeing things from my friends point of view made me blind and unable to see what was really going on around me at the party where we met each other for the first time ever!
